Morningside Park Salmon Run!!!

I have to admit that I expected this to be just another park in Toronto. But was instead completely surprised at what Morningside has to offer. Vistas surrounded by woodland, streams and creeks, cascades and eroded crumbling cliffs and the sound of moving water. I really wish I had the chance to visit this place earlier, the Autumn colors here would have been stunning. The most astonishing thing that surprised me was the salmon run that was still happening so late in October right here in the city!!! I managed to get real close to these wary fish and got some great footage of them swimming upstream.

Apart from Morningside Park being one of the largest parks in Toronto it has facilities that cater to everyone. Kids have a play ground, there are plenty of places to sit down and have a picnic or barbeque, and of course winding paths with park benches for you to sit, relax and enjoy nature. There is a bird feeder right near the entrance (Beside the car park) where I could see some Blue Jays fluttering around. I even found some apple trees laden with fruit near one of the picnic areas. All in all this park makes a nice place to spend time with friends and family.

It was great to be able to some shots and videos of the park though often as it happens the light seems to drop because of the ravines. Below you will find some cool video footage of the salmon run and cascades don’t miss these. There are also photos of the park. As usual I sometimes moved off the main path to explore the area. First let us enjoy some video shots of the salmon run and cascades followed by some photos of the park area.

Did’nt expect to see a waterfall here, but Morningside surprised me
There are lots of other cascades at Morningside but unfortunately the light was not good enough to take photos
Walk along the creek when you get the opportunity I saw some herons here and also salmon.

Morningside Park is easily accessable by the TTC bus service. It is still hard to imagine that there are all these places right here in Toronto. Morningside has a non linear layout that is to say that there is a fork near (because the tributary creeks meet and merge) the path on the first bridge that crosses the creek if you go of on this path on the right it will take you up the creek across a picnic area to one of the cascades. Further on the path becomes a bit more wild and if you take it further down where it nothing more then a slender overgrown way you can climb the side of the hills to see a wonderful view of the creek from high above. So I would say that it is quite worthwhile to explore this park even when paths are indistinct.

Below are some images of the park for you to enjoy.

This is the first place you can go near the creek but you have to leave the path. I saw salmon here too but could not get close enough to photograph them. -Morningside Park

We moved further down the path. Most trees had lost thier leaves and the colors had faded mostly to brown. But occasionally one would still stand out in sharp contrast. – Morningside Park.

A beautiful Path to follow.- Morningside Park.
Here I came across a dead salmon on the path. At first I thought a hawk must have dropped it but after looking around I realized that the salmon had got stranded here when the creek had overflowed its banks from the heavy rain the previous two days before. You could tell this by seeing that all the grass was flattened facing downstream. – Morningside Park
The creek widens here and if you stick around you can see lots of other fish moving in the water. – Morningside Park
